Muscle spasms are spontaneous muscular contractions that often occur in the feet, calves, thighs, arms and abdomen, according to WebMD. They typically result from fatigue, overuse of muscles or improper stretching before strenuous work or exercise. While sometimes painful, most muscle spasms are harmless and treatable at home. An epsom salt bath, icing, warmth and massage are all good remedies for tired and spasm-prone muscles. Placing weight or pressure on the affected muscle also provides relief. Simply standing on a cramped leg and bending at the knee is an excellent way to relieve a spasm, as is sitting with the leg extended, gripping the toes and pulling backward. Proper intake of vitamins and calcium, maintaining hydration and stretching before strenuous activity all help prevent future muscle spasms.
Sometimes muscle spasms are a sign of other conditions, so frequent spasms or spasms with no discernible cause warrant a trip to the doctor, reports WebMD. Pinched nerves and poor circulation both cause muscle spasms. They may also be a side effect of certain medications, such as some used to treat osteoporosis, asthma and high cholesterol.
