They ranked each eating plan was ranked according to its ability to produce short-term and long-term weight loss results, nutrition, ease and ability to prevent and manage heart disease.
The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension or DASH diet ranked highest. It is a government-endorsed plan designed for individuals with hypertension. The plan uses a person’s age to determine the daily calorie limits and specifies which foods the person should eat. Some fats and oils are allowed. However, individuals are advised to eat five or fewer sweets per week and to gradually work towards a sodium intake of less than 1500 milligrams per day.
The Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes or TLC Diet ranked as the second best diet plan. Dieters choose a calorie level depending on nutrition goals. For example, individuals interested in lowering cholesterol levels are allowed a higher daily calorie allowance than those interested in losing weight. The plan encourages high consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Among its limitations, dieters must reduce fat intake to less than 7 percent of total daily calorie allowance and cap cholesterol intake at 200 milligrams per day.
