Exceeding five cups of coffee and two alcoholic beverages daily is associated with lower fertility, explains William Gibbons of the Baylor College of Medicine. Gibbons added that smoking cigarettes affects the receptiveness of the uterus to the egg in women and reduces sperm production in men. The fertile window is the six-day period ending on the day of ovulation; pregnancy is most likely to occur within the three days before ovulation.
