The five techniques in a Swedish massage are effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, friction and vibration. Effleurage uses the palms or fingertips to apply long strokes, which vary between light and firm pressure. This technique helps the masseuse spread oil and evaluate the body. It also soothes pain and relaxes the muscles.
Petrissage uses the knuckles and thumbs to deeply penetrate the muscles. This stretches the muscles while relieving swelling and fatigue.
Tapotement, also known as rhythmic tapping, uses the sides of the hands to tap the muscles. This stimulates the muscles and improves circulation.
Friction involves rubbing the palms together to heat them up, and then rubbing them onto the muscles. The heat warms up the muscles, preparing them for other techniques and relaxing them.
For vibration, the masseuse grabs the muscles and shakes them. This loosens the muscles and soothes pain.
