Stress has emotional, physical, cognitive and behavioral symptoms, notes WebMD. Emotional symptoms include frustration, feeling overwhelmed, low self-esteem, isolation and difficulty relaxing. Stress can cause physical symptoms such as chest pain, an upset stomach, ringing in the ear and infections, and it can adversely impact sexual ability. Constant worry and inability to focus are cognitive symptoms, while behavioral symptoms may include changes in appetite, drug or alcohol abuse, and nervous behaviors.
Long-term chronic stress can cause or worsen serious health problems, such as cardiovascular disease, gastrointestinal problems and mental health problems, states WebMD. Many symptoms of stress may also be signs of other health conditions and require medical evaluation to determine whether therapy or medical intervention is required. Left unchecked, stress may lead to high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
