A salmonella infection is a common bacterial infection of the intestinal tract, usually caused by eating contaminated food that has not been cooked well enough, states Mayo Clinic. The earliest symptoms of the infection are abdominal cramps, fever and diarrhea, with these symptoms developing anywhere between eight and 72 hours after infection.

Most healthy people recover from the infection within a few days; however, it may take several months for a person's bowels to return to normal once the infection has cleared up, states Mayo Clinic. The main goal of treatment while a person is sick is to replace the fluids and electrolytes he may have lost while infected, according to Healthline. Adults should drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. For children, a pediatrician may recommend rehydration through the use of Pedialyte or similar drinks. It is also important for anyone infected to get plenty of rest and switch to a diet that consists of more easily digestible foods, such as rice, toast, bananas and applesauce. People infected with salmonella should also avoid dairy products.
