Hyperthyroid endocrine myopathy is a condition in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, greatly increasing production of thyroxine, a key muscle-regulating hormone, as Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian explains. Treatment consists of returning the level of thyroxine to its normal range with medicines or surgery, and it is typically highly effective. Symptoms include episodes of paralysis, atrophy of hip and shoulder muscles, and difficulty with controlling eye and eyelid movements. Hypothyroid endocrine myopathy is a condition in which the production of thyroxine is lower than normal.
