Other problems are unexplained blood clots, lumps in the abdomen and fatigue, says the National Cancer Institute. These symptoms can be caused by the cancer itself, the accumulation of fluid in the abdomen or other reasons. In this case, the mesothelioma is found in the peritoneum, the formal word for the tissue that lines the abdomen.
The main risk factor for developing mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, says the American Cancer Society. In the case of mesothelioma in the lining of the abdomen, the cancer arose from the patient swallowing or coughing up asbestos fibers. Some experts also believe that mesothelioma is also related to exposure to zeolites or radiation therapy used to treat patients for other cancers of the abdomen. People who were injected with thorium dioxide many decades ago may also be at increased risk for mesothelioma.
There is some indication that the simian virus 40 increases the risk of developing mesothelioma, says the ACS. This virus was found in vaccines that were administered between 1955 and 1963. Though there is no definitive link as of 2015, mesothelioma takes decades to develop.Learn more about Cancer
