Are There Symptoms Associated With High Liver Enzymes?

Symptoms associated with high or elevated liver enzymes include extreme tiredness and water retention in the feet and ankles, explains the Scott Hamilton CARES Initiative. If liver enzyme levels are caused by liver damage, individuals may also notice a yellowish tint to their skin and eye whites.

Elevated liver enzymes can be caused by several factors, including alcohol consumption and medical conditions such as hepatitis A, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and obesity, according to Mayo Clinic. Additional medical conditions that may cause high readings on liver enzyme tests include liver cancer, hypothyroidism and mononucleosis. Ingestion of certain medications, such as cholesterol drugs and acetaminophen, may also raise liver enzyme levels.
