How Do You Find a Surgeon to Operate on Your Leg?

Patients in need of surgery on their legs can locate an orthopaedic surgeon using the Find an Orthopaedist feature of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons website. The feature makes it possible to search surgeons by location, name or specialty.

To find a nearby orthopaedic surgeon, patients must first select whether they want to search the Find an Orthopaedist database by zip code; U.S. city and state; Canada province; or country outside of the United States or Canada. If searching by zip code, the tool offers the option to limit search results to surgeons within a certain distance in miles. After performing a search, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons website loads a list of surgeons who fit the specified criteria. Along with each surgeon's name, the list features information such as office location; anatomical and surgical specialties; and age groups treated.

Orthopaedic surgeons treat a wide range of conditions related to the thighs, lower legs, feet, ankles and knees, notes the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Examples of surgical procedures include total knee replacement, knee arthroscopy and meniscal transplant surgery. Surgeons treat conditions such as bowed legs, arthritis of the knees, discrepancies in leg length and deep vein thrombosis. They are also able to address musculoskeletal problems in other areas of the body, such as the hands, neck, shoulders, wrists and back.
