Supplements and foods that contain iron, folate and vitamin B12, as well as ones that contain Vitamin C, may help prevent certain types of anemia, according to Mayo Clinic. However, many types of anemia are not preventable.
Iron deficiency anemia is the most common type of anemia, explains the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. There are two forms of iron supplements, but the body absorbs the ferrous form more easily. Iron supplements can cause side effects such as nausea, vomiting and constipation, as well as diarrhea. It is important to check with a doctor before taking iron supplements, but taking half a dose of the pill or taking it with food may be helpful in reducing side effects. Some examples of brand-name iron supplements are Auryxia, Bifera and Femiron, notes Mayo Clinic.
Foods high in iron, such as liver, red meat and fish, may also help prevent iron deficiency anemia. Taking folic acid supplements can help prevent and treat vitamin deficiency anemia, states the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Eating animal foods or vitamin B12 fortified breakfast cereals can also help prevent this type of anemia. Folate deficiency anemia may occur during a woman's third trimester of pregnancy, when extra folate is necessary.
