Sulfameth trimethoprim 800/160 tabs are a blending of two antibiotics: trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. Physicians use this double-strength prescription medication to treat bacterial infections, including intestinal, respiratory, middle ear and urinary infections and pneumonia, according to MedicineNet.

Drugs.com notes that the medication is also prescribed for bronchitis, urinary tract infections, traveler’s diarrhea, shigellosis and ear infections. The dosage varies depending on the individual’s condition but can range from one to three times per day for up to a period of 21 days.

Side effects include mild, itchy rashes; loss of appetite; and nausea or vomiting. In rare instances, this drug can cause watery or bloody diarrhea, sore throat, bloody or watery stools, jaundice and swelling of the tongue or face. Other uncommon, adverse reactions to sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim include rapid heartbeat, flu or cold symptoms, swollen gums and mouth sores, warns Drugs.com.

Sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim might make some people more sensitive to the sun. Therefore, while taking this medication, individuals should wear protective clothing and/or sunscreen. MedicineNet also notes that this medication might cause a reduction in blood sugar levels in individuals who have diabetes. It can cause elderly patients to experience skin reactions, easy bruising or bleeding and blood disorders.
