Smoking is a major risk factor for CVD, but if smokers quit, they reduce their risk to that of non-smokers within five years, explains Mayo Clinic. Heart-healthy diets are those rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, and they are low in saturated and trans fats. Adults should get at least 30 to 60 minutes of moderately intense exercise most days of the week. People can also reduce their risk of CVD by getting seven to nine hours of sleep per night.
