Reumofan Plus is a supplement used for the treatment of arthritis, muscle pain, osteoporosis and bone cancer, states the FDA. Made in Mexico by Riger Naturals, makers claimed the product was all-natural. However, the FDA found the drugs methocarbamol and diclofenac present in the supplement in 2012.
Since 2012, various Reumofan Plus sellers in the United States have been recalling the product due to the discovery of undeclared drug ingredients in the supplement, reports the FDA. Companies recalling Reumofan, as of 2015, include Samantha Lynn Inc.; Reumofan Plus USA, LLC; Reumofan USA, LLC; and Pain Free By Nature.
Other ingredients found in the supplement Reumofan Plus include dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, in addition to the anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxant, reports the Arthritis Foundation. Nevertheless, Reumofan Plus packaging claims that the supplement only contains natural ingredients such as the herbs white willow, eastern teaberry and Holm oak.
Reumofan Plus can cause serious side effects, according to the FDA. Consumers have reported such side effects as stroke, severe bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract, dizziness and even death. Other reported side effects include high blood sugar levels, problems with liver and kidney function, and corticosteroid withdrawal symptoms.
Mexican health authorities have also issued a recall of the supplement and ordered Riger Naturals to stop producing Reumofan products. However, Mexican authorities were unable to find Riger Naturals' place of business, according to a September 2013 report by USA Today.
