The American Academy of Neurology recommends treating the tingling, numbness and pain associated with peripheral neuropathy by holding stretches for short durations, called static muscle stretches. Suggested stretches for foot neuropathy include ankle rotations, toe tapping and holding the foot in a fixed position, according to the Neuropathy Treatment Group.
Proper care combines stretching with other regular exercise, such as walking, biking, swimming or water aerobics for optimal effectiveness, according to the American Academy of Neurology. In addition, other healthy lifestyle choices such as a balanced diet, quitting smoking and reducing alcohol consumption may improve peripheral neuropathy, according to the Mayo Clinic. To ensure proper foot protection, the Mayo Clinic suggests the use of loose socks and padded shoes.
