Additionally, diabetics should aim for a well-balanced meal that contains a blend of fruits, vegetables, starches, proteins and fats. They should avoid sugar-sweetened beverages that contain high fructose corn syrup or sucrose as these are high in calories and rapidly increase blood sugars. A physician or dietitian can help design a diet plan tailored to the individual diabetic patient to maximize results.
Exercise is another effective means of lowering blood sugars because exercise trains the body to utilize insulin more efficiently and induces muscles to use glucose for energy, explains Mayo Clinic. Exercise may also be useful in reducing stress, and stress produces hormones that may raise blood sugars. Diabetics should identify stress triggers and learn relaxation techniques to reduce glucose levels.
