Steady state exercise can refer to two different things: any activity that is performed at a relatively constant speed for an extended period of time or a balance between energy required and energy available during exercise. Steady state exercise typically occurs at a moderate intensity where heart rate usually falls in the range of 55 to 69 percent.

The type of exercise doesn't matter, whether it's running, biking, hiking or any other endurance sport. By exercising at a constant speed, people will burn calories and fatigue at relatively consistent rates.
