The standard resting heart rate for adults and children 10 years and older is between 60 and 100 beats per minute, according to the American Heart Association. For well-trained athletes, the average resting heart rate is between 40 and 60 beats per minute.
A lower resting heart rate generally indicates that an individual has more efficient heart function and better cardiovascular fitness, explains Mayo Clinic. To measure the heart rate, either place the index and third fingers to the side of the windpipe or place two fingers between the bone and the tendon on the thumb side of the wrist. Find the pulse, and count the number of beats in 15 seconds. Then multiply this number by four, and that number is the heart rate.
