The slogan for National Nutrition Month changes every year. 2018’s slogan will be “Go Further with Food” and the 2017 slogan was “Put Your Best Fork Forward.” The theme changes every year as does the promotional art. National Nutrition Month occurs each year during March and was originally created by The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
The purpose of National Nutrition Month is to create awareness about healthy living via making more informed food choices and developing better eating and physical activity habits, typically through lower calorie consumption. It is also designed to promote members of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as reputable professionals who dispense sound advice on healthy eating to members of the public.
During National Nutrition Month, Registered Dietitian Day is also celebrated. The majority of the members of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics are either registered dietitians or dietetic technicians. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is formerly known as the American Dietetic Association.
National Nutrition Month originally began as a week-long event during the month of March in 1973. The event proved to be popular among the public and, as a result, became a month-long celebration in 1980.
