MayoClinic.com, EatingWell.com and Heart.org are websites that have free healthy-heart diet sheets. Mayo Clinic offers a two-day healthy eating menu with nutritional analysis; EatingWell has a seven-day plan available at five different calorie levels; and the American Heart Association has information about how to make healthy food choices.
Healthy eating and physical exercise help maintain a healthy heart. A good diet is rich in fruit, vegetables and whole grains and restricts high-fat and high-sodium foods. Daily calorie recommendations are determined by age, gender and levels of physical activity. It is important to replace foods and drinks that are high in calories but low in nutrients with those that are nutrient-rich. These food choices are usually lower in calories as well.
