One example of a simple three-day detoxification diet involves drinking tea and replacing meals with smoothies. The focus of this diet is to eat only fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and beans for three days, according to Prevention magazine.
Antioxidant-rich foods such as spinach, kale and cranberries activate enzymes in the liver that make harmful substances water-soluble, allowing the body to get rid of them more easily. Garlic, onions and eggs help the body create an antioxidant called glutathione, explains Prevention. This antioxidant also makes it easier for the body to dispel heavy toxins such as mercury and arsenic. Detox dieters should choose organic produce, as conventional produce contains pesticides that have the potential to damage health. If it's not possible to buy organic, they should choose produce items with peelable skins.
This three-day diet also involves drinking eight to 12 glasses of water or decaffeinated tea per day. It is important to avoid processed, fried and fast foods, notes Prevention. Individuals should also avoid alcohol, caffeine, dairy, red meat and sugar for best results. For snack between meals, they can eat organic fruits and nuts or small salads dressed with lemon juice and extra virgin olive oil. It's also a good idea to eat light for the 24 days following the detoxification diet.
