Healthways SilverSneakers is a fitness program designed for older adults. It helps them manage health and improve strength, balance and endurance. The program is included with over 65 Medicare health plans, as of June 2015.
A SilverSneakers member can go to any location that participates in the program, such as a fitness center, YMCA or Curves, and use any amenities included with a basic membership at that location. He can also meet with a program advisor at that location to receive information about SilverSneakers and the program's classes at that location. He can also sign up for an account at HealthwaysFIT.com. Benefits of an account include health-related articles, healthy recipes, fitness plans and video exercise demonstrations.
If a member doesn't have access to a location that participates in SilverSneakers, he can order a SilverSneakers Steps kit. The kit includes tools for at-home workouts, including resistance bands and exercise DVDs.
SilverSneakers classes are between 45 and 60 minutes. Participating locations offer these classes at least twice per week. Equipment that is typically used in these classes includes weights, elastic tubing with handles and a small exercise ball. The instructors of these classes are trained in fitness for older adults. SilverSneakers also requires in-person training and an evaluation for its instructors.
