Common side effects of Zithromax Z-Pak include mild upset stomach, mild stomach pain, mild diarrhea, dizziness, and vaginal itching or discharge, states Everyday Health. Fatigue, nervousness, insomnia, mild rash or ringing in the ears may also occur, according to RxList. Hearing problems and decrease in taste or smell may develop.
More serious side effects that require consultation with a doctor include watery or bloody diarrhea; headache combined with chest pain, severe dizziness, fainting and rapid heartbeats; nausea or loss of appetite; and jaundice, clay-colored stools or dark urine, advises Everyday Health. Fever, sore throat, skin pain, face or tongue swelling followed by a red or purple rash that spreads, and blisters or peels are also symptoms that require medical attention. The patient requires emergency medical care if hives develop, breathing difficulty occurs, or swelling occurs in the face, lips, throat or tongue.
Zithromax Z-Pak causes the skin to be more sensitive to sunlight, increasing the risk of sunburn, warns Everyday Health. It also interacts with many medications, including antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium, reducing their effectiveness. Antidepressants citalopram and escitalopram, anti-malaria medications chloroquine and halofantrine, blood thinners warfarin and Coumadin, and antibiotics clarithromycin, erythromycin, moxifloxacin and pentamidine also interact with Zithromax Z-Pak.
