Side effects of nerve damage resulting from the overuse of Fixodent and other popular denture products have been reported, states WebMD. Patients showing side effects, reportedly caused by zinc poisoning, exhibit symptoms such as a spastic gait, limb weakness and numbness, and difficulty walking.
Patients with poorly fitting dentures often overuse denture cream in order to provide a suitable seal, according to WebMD. This overuse results in excessive zinc levels in the body. The human body needs zinc, but its presence is balanced by another important element, copper. When excessive levels of zinc are introduced to the body, copper levels drop to dangerously low levels. This results in bone marrow suppression and degeneration of the spinal cord, usually causing a crippling form of nerve damage known as human swayback disease.
