WebMD does not consider silver an essential mineral supplement, pointing out that in 1997, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration ruled colloidal silver both unsafe and ineffective. Despite these concerns, colloidal silver is still used to treat yeast and bacterial infections, parasites and viruses, lung conditions, eczema, and inflammation. Still others use colloidal silver to treat cancer, diabetes, arthritis, gum disease and the flu.

Although colloidal silver is sometimes taken by pregnant women, WebMD strongly advises against this because increased silver deposits have been linked to abnormal development of the ear, face and neck of the fetus. It is considered unsafe even when applied topically to treat acne or burns.

Colloidal silver is believed to kill germs by binding itself to proteins and destroying them. Jonathan Campbell, a health consultant, does not refute its place in medical history but points out that patients had little education and no access to other germ-killing agents.
