Side effects of intensity modulated radiation therapy, or IMRT, include experiencing a burning feeling during urination, frequent or urgent urination, and difficulty in starting to urinate, according to UCLA Health. Some individuals also experience sexual problems, skin issues, loss of appetite, tiredness or bowel problems.
Some men develop erectile dysfunction or impotence with IMRT, states UCLA Health. In certain cases, skin troubles appear as dry, irritated tissue, but a "moist reaction" is also possible, where skin becomes wet and sore.
Several types of intestinal problems are possible with IMRT. The rectal area is sometimes painful, or hemorrhoids form, UCLA Health explains, or the urge for a bowel movement comes on suddenly. Diarrhea and rectal bleeding are also potential side effects.
