Patients should also contact a doctor right away if they experience any serious side effects, which may include mood or mental changes such as memory loss or depression. Other serious side effects include an increase or new occurrence of vaginal odor, irritation, discharge or itching, as well as severe stomach pain.
Unusual vaginal bleeding caused by estradiol may include breakthrough bleeding, spotting, prolonged bleeding or recurrent bleeding, according to WebMD. The ankles, feet or hands may become swollen, and the patient may have dark urine or yellowing of the eyes or skin. Increased thirst and urination are also possible. On rare occasions, estradiol can cause problems from blood clots, including stroke, deep vein thrombosis and heart attack.
