Prediabetics should eat a lot of foods high in fiber and lean protein sources, and they should also remain well-hydrated. Reducing portions of foods that elevate the risk of type 2 diabetes is a must, according to Everyday Health.
Prediabetics do have an elevated risk of type 2 diabetes, but changes to diet and exercise routines can keep them from becoming diabetics. One important step is to eliminate sugary drinks from the diet. This includes sweetened sodas, juice, sweet tea and those latte creations that are bursting with calories. While such foods as white rice, white potatoes and pasta are still acceptable, the portions in which prediabetics consume them should be significantly smaller, according to Everyday Health.
People with prediabetes still need some fat in their diets, but those fats should come from healthy sources such as nuts, olive and vegetable oils, avocado and seeds. Dairy products should be low-fat or fat-free, whether milk or yogurt. Alcohol consumption should cap at two drinks per day for men and one for women. Limiting red meat consumption to such lean cuts as "round" or "loin" helps, particularly when the cook trims off all of the visible fat before preparation. Adding fish a couple times a week can reduce the likelihood of full diabetes as well, reports Everyday Health.
