Persons with diabetes are advised to keep a diet low in carbohydrates, says the American Diabetes Association. The appropriate meal plan for diabetics focuses on improving blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Meal planning for diabetics may be done using the plate method, carbohydrate counting method or by following the guidelines of the glycemic index, explains the American Diabetes Association.
The carbohydrate counting method focuses on improving blood glucose by limiting carbohydrate intake; the suggested starting range is 45 to 60 grams per meal. The plate method is centered around the inclusion of non-starchy vegetables while having smaller portions of starchy foods and meats, explains the ADA.
