A patient with a salmonella infection, or salmonellosis, is contagious for up to several weeks following infection. According to the Central District Health Department of Idaho, taking antibiotics for salmonellosis treatment does not reduce the risk of transmission.

Salmonella infections generally occur after contact with contaminated animals or food. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains that most salmonellosis cases resolve themselves within five to seven days. In cases that involve the elderly or those with compromised immune systems, salmonellosis sometimes proves fatal. Because infected individuals are contagious, it is important to refrain from contact with those who are battling a salmonella infection.
