According to PositiveMed, there are several ways to treat pink eye without going to the clinic, including using breast milk, fresh aloe, lemon juice drops and pressing a cold cloth to the infected eye. All About Vision states that viral pink eye cannot be cured, but the symptoms can be relieved with eye drops that contain decongestants and antihistamines.
Breast milk is considered to be one of the best remedies for pink eye since it is filled with nutrients and antibodies, notes PositiveMed. Fresh breast milk is used to flush the afflicted eye. If obtaining breast milk isn't possible, bags of chamomile tea are a good alternative. Placing the tea bags on the eye for 10 minutes draws out heat and decreases swelling.
Fresh aloe has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and is used to relieve the pain associated with pink eye. While painful, a drop of saline or lemon juice flushes out the eye and encourages tearing, notes PositiveMed.
By keeping a cold cloth on the eye for an hour, the flow of blood is kept away from the eye, which keeps the eye from swelling and becoming red, says PositiveMed. Replace the cold cloth as needed in order to allow the tissues of the infected eye to heal.
