Knee pain may be reduced or prevented by taking a break from any activity that is causing discomfort in the knee area, explains WebMD. While resting the knee, it may be helpful to place a pillow under the knee and keep it elevated above the level of the heart to reduce swelling. If moving around on the leg with the sore knee, crutches can provide relief of pressure on the knee. Knee pain can be managed with acetaminophen, aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications.
For knee pain due to an injury of less than 48 hours old, cold packs and ice can minimize swelling and can be used for 10 to 20 minutes for three or more times per day. The initial swelling involved with a knee injury can also be reduced by avoiding exposing the knee to hot water and abstaining from drinking alcohol or smoking.
