When coronary circulation is prevented or blocked, the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen. WebMD states that if the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen for too long, a myocardial infarction, or heart attack, results, leading to death of part of the heart muscle.
According to WebMD, problems with coronary circulation commonly produce angina. Angina, or chest pain, is discomfort that is caused when the heart muscle lacks oxygen due to compromised blood flow. After blood flow is restored to the heart, angina resolves, and the heart muscle is not damaged. In contrast, chest discomfort that occurs during a heart attack lasts longer and is sometimes associated with other symptoms, such as shortness of breath, dizziness and nausea.
