Use a small amount of nonabrasive toothpaste on a cotton or soft wool cloth to buff away scratches on eyeglasses. The toothpaste should be applied in a small circular motion with gentle pressure on the lens for about 10 seconds, after which the eyeglasses should be rinsed with cold water and rubbed dry. If the scratch is very stubborn, you may need to repeat this process.
A thick paste of baking soda may also be used to repair scratches on eyeglasses as an alternative to toothpaste. The paste should also be applied using a soft cotton or wool cloth.
For plastic eyeglasses, it is best to use a glass etching compound such as Armor Etch to repair the scratches. Place a thick layer of this compound on both sides on the lens, and leave it for five minutes before rinsing and drying the lens. Never rub the lens when it is covered with the compound. Hydrofluoric acid, the active ingredient in this compound, removes the outer coating on plastic lenses. Never use it on glass lenses as it can damage them further.
Other products that can be used to repair eyeglass scratches include vehicle cleaning wax and windshield water repellents.
