Some of the causes include food poisoning, stomach flu, food allergies, irritable bowel syndrome and constipation. Some life-threatening conditions, such as early appendicitis and colon cancer, usually cause mild pain. Typically, the severity of the stomach ache does not indicate the seriousness of the underlying cause.
If the pain lasts for more than a few hours it is necessary to contact a doctor, says WebMD. Patients should also seek medical attention if they suspect the pain is due to another health problem. The doctor performs a physical exam and discusses with the patients the type of signs they have to determine the cause of the pain.
