To rest a knee, suspend or adjust the activity causing the knee pain, says WebMD. Put a small pillow under the knee while it rests. Elevate the knee at or above heart level to cut down on swelling. When icing a knee, use the ice pack for 10 to 20 minutes at least three times a day. For the first two days after an injury that causes knee pain, bypass hot showers, hot tubs, alcohol and other items that can increase swelling. If swelling disappears after two to three days, start applying heat to the knee, and begin mild exercises.
Massage or gentle rubs on the affected knee also help with pain, says WebMD. However, those approaches should not be causing further pain. Medications such as Tylenol, Bayer and Advil also help; no one under age 20 should take aspirin without a doctor's advice.
Compressing the knee helps with swelling, according to WebMD. Loosen the wrap or bandage if tingling, more pain or numbness occur.
