According to Mayo Clinic, an umbilical hernia occurs when part of the lining of the abdominal cavity pushes through a hole in the abdominal muscles. It is a condition that is found in both children and adults. While the hernia often corrects itself in children, adults can may need surgery to repair it. The surgery involves the surgeon making an incision at the belly button through which the protruding tissue is pushed back into place. The hole in the abdominal wall is then stitched together and in adults, is sometimes reinforced with mesh. Surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis, although more severe cases may require hospitalization. During the recovery time, patients are advised to not lift anything heavier than 10 pounds.
WebMD recommends no heavy lifting for several months after the surgery and to follow the doctor's instructions at follow-up appointments.Learn more about Conditions & Diseases
