Recipes that contain simple carbohydrates such as sugars and starches should be avoided, explains Mayo Clinic. Instead, meals can include healthy carbohydrates such as legumes, whole grains and low-fat dairy products.
Healthy fish such as tuna, mackerel, salmon and sardines are viable additions to recipes and can be eaten twice per week, states Mayo Clinic. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats can be eaten in small doses, but it is best to avoid trans fats and saturated fats whenever possible. Common foods that contain trans or saturated fats include bacon, sausage, beef and hot dogs.
