Salt tablets are most commonly recommended for patients with hyponatremia, a condition where they have excess water in relation to sodium. Hyponatremia can be caused by renal failure, excessive water intake, hypothyroidism and other illnesses or conditions that deplete salt.
Patients with low blood pressure, which is often accompanied by symptoms of dizziness or fainting, may be treated with salt tablets to increase sodium levels. Others diagnosed with orthostatic hypotension, a chronic illness common among the elderly and those taking multiple medications, may also benefit from salt tablets. Since excessive levels of sodium can be harmful to human health, patients should only follow this treatment when instructed to do so by a doctor.
