The individual can either experience it herself or witness a terrifying act done to others. To be diagnosed with PTSD, an individual must meet certain criteria, which a doctor goes over during the evaluation. Some examples of criteria used for diagnosis include having distressing dreams or memories and experiencing flashbacks of the situation.
