Lie down on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the ground. Your feet should be comfortably away from your backside at a distance that does not place any strain on your back or hip flexors.
Place your arms behind your head so that your elbows are parallel to the floor. They should be pointing in opposite directions.
Perform the upward phase of the sit-up by contracting your abdominal muscles. Tuck your chin in slightly, and bring your upper body off the ground. Continue up until your upper back is off the ground. At this point, pause momentarily. Throughout this process, keep your elbows in the same position and your neck relaxed.
Perform the downward phase by slowly lowering your upper back onto the ground. While doing this, your feet and backside should stay in contact with the ground.
