A Primatene Mist inhaler is an over-the-counter inhaler used to treat occasional, mild asthma symptoms, including wheezing, shortness of breath and tightness in the chest. The inhaler contains 0.22 milligrams of epinephrine in each inhalation, according to Primatene Mist.
Only people who have been formally diagnosed with asthma should use a Primatene Mist inhaler. Individuals should call their doctor if they do not experience symptom relief within 20 minutes, require 12 inhalations per day, use more than nine inhalations a day for greater than three days a week, or experience asthma attacks more than twice a week, notes Primatene Mist. Possible side effects of the inhaler include nervousness, elevated blood pressure, rapid heart rate and seizure.
