Water dilutes the substances that form the stones, which are excreted in urine. Therefore, drinking 64 ounces of a variety of fluids daily helps remove these potentially harmful materials. In particular, citrus drinks, such as orange juice and lemonade, contain citrate, which helps prevent stone formation.
The Harvard Health Blog indicates that insufficient amounts of calcium lead to the development of kidney stones. The quantity of calcium needed varies by age. Calcium from food is preferable, because it is possible that calcium supplements are linked to the formation of the stones.
Controlling sodium intake helps prevent kidney stones, the Harvard Health Blog states. Excessive sodium sometimes leads to too much calcium in the urine, which contributes to stone formation. Though 2,300 milligrams of sodium is the standard daily recommendation, anyone with a past history of this sodium and calcium problem should take in no more than 1,500 milligrams per day.
The Harvard Health Blog also recommends limiting the amount of animal protein that is eaten. It increases an individual's level of uric acid, and this helps kidney stones form. A day's serving of animal protein, such as red meat, poultry, eggs and seafood, should be no larger than a deck of cards.
Specific foods contribute to the development of the stones, so these should be limited or even avoided, the Harvard Health Blog warns. Problematic foods include beets, chocolate, spinach, rhubarb, tea, most nuts and cola.
