The Rice Diet is an intensive program invented in 1939 that was originally intended to treat patients suffering from diabetes or hypertension. The diet consists of three phases. During the first phase, dieters are restricted to 800 calories per day, which jump-starts weight loss and puts the body through a detoxification process. After the first phase, dieters are required to eat no more than 1,000 calories per day. Foods allowed on the Rice Diet include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-salt beans. It generally includes foods that are high in fiber but low in protein.
Besides weight loss and detoxification, the Rice Diet aims to help dieters achieve greater balance in their lives, learn how to effectively manage stress and create a better quality of life on the whole. Regular low-impact exercise, especially walking, keeping a food journal and learning to meditate are the main non-dietary requirements for those on the Rice Diet.
