When a person suffers from kidney disease, the goal of adapting a new dietis to balance fluids and minerals in the body and eliminate waste, since the kidney's cannot process fluids in the same manner as healthy kidneys. The exact diet that should be followed varies from person to person and a doctor will determine what is best.
Some common recommendations include limiting the intake of fluids and replacing foods high in carbohydrates with vegetables, fruits and high-fiber foods. Since some people with kidney disease experience anemia, foods high in iron should also be consumed. This includes leafy green vegetables, such as spinach and kale.
Balancing a healthy diet is not always simple and due to this, a personwith kidney disease often has to have certain levels, such as potassium checked. If a person is on dialysis treatments, a diet adjustment may need made. For instance, once dialysis begins, many doctors recommend upping protein intake.
