Small sweet potatoes and russet potatoes are part of a healthy diet for diabetics, according to WebMD. Foods that are low in fat and high in fiber are ideal food choices for those with diabetes.
Whole grains, beans, lean protein and plenty of fruits and vegetables are all good to add to a diabetic diet, states WebMD. Those with diabetes should also watch their salt intake and stick to foods that are low in sodium. Since excess sugar may be problematic for diabetics, doctors recommend sugar-free or no sugar added foods for patients, too.
Some of the best fruit choices for diabetes include berries, watermelon, peaches and grapes, explains WebMD. Most vegetables, such as radishes, carrots, tomatoes and garlic are also an excellent choice. Low-fat dairy and salad dressings are appropriate for a diabetic diet as are many meat options such as turkey, boneless skinless chicken breast, tofu and salmon. Frozen foods are also acceptable for those eating a diet for diabetics. Doctors recommend, however, that these frozen meals not have a lot of sodium in them, even if they are low on carbs and sugar. Instead of adding salt, spices such as herb mixes, onion or garlic powder can help food taste great.
