A person can often treat leg pain and weakness at home as long as it is minor, claims Mayo Clinic. An individual needs to avoid using the leg as much as possible and rest. An individual should also apply an ice pack or bag of frozen vegetables, such as peas, on the area three times a day for 15 to 20 minutes. A person should also elevate the leg when sitting or lying down and take over-the-counter pain relievers if desired.
For those who may have severe pain or a more severe leg injury, consulting a doctor is recommended, according to Mayo Clinic. A person can schedule an office visit if the pain and weakness doesn't subside within a few days of home treatment or if the pain worsens. If there are signs of infection, swelling, calf pain after sitting for long periods of time or breathing problems associated with the leg pain, a person should see a doctor as soon as possible because these symptoms can indicate a serious medical problem.Learn more about Pain & Symptoms
