Dr. Johanna Budwig, the creator of the Budwig diet, was not an oncologist. She was a pharmacologist, chemist and physicist with a doctorate in physics. She developed a dietary protocol intended to improve the functioning of cells to help treat cancer as well as chronic diseases.
The Budwig diet involves daily consumption of a mixture of prescribed amounts of flax seed oil and cottage cheese. Patients must also follow a strict diet that includes abstaining from meats, animal fats, oils, sugar, soy products and processed foods. Dr. Budwig believed that this diet prevented and cured cancer. Her theory was that the blood of cancer patients was deficient in polyunsaturated fatty acids, and this deficiency permitted cancer to develop and thrive. She believed that the flax seed oil/cottage cheese combination corrected this problem. There is no proof that this protocol is effective.
