What Are the Physical Signs of a Chemical Imbalance?

According to Mark Costello of Acupuncture Today, some signs of a chemical imbalance include panic attacks, migraines, depression, irritability, absent mindedness and elevated sensitivity to pain. Schizophrenia and other mental disorders are sometimes a sign of chemical imbalance, according to Wikipedia.

Depression, anxiety and allied states are the end product of a sequence of events that starts with improper levels of blood sugar, according to Costello. Like a vehicle, the brain needs fuel to operate. This fuel comes in the form of glucose. If levels of glucose in the blood falls, the brain is unable to produce chemicals that enhance mood. The result is depression, moodiness and a lack of energy.

According to Costello, a condition called insulin resistance is at the root of the problem. The condition causes wild fluctuations in blood sugar levels. According to Costello, insulin resistance affects 25 percent of Americans. The condition causes chronically low levels of serotonin in the brain. Among other functions, the hormone regulates mood. While depression can be handled with drugs, Costello claims that these treat symptoms and not causes. Additionally, prolonged use of antidepressants can lead to dependency. Instead, he recommends acupuncture, dietary changes, supplements and herbs to restore neurotransmitter balance and maintain blood glucose at the right levels.
