According to WebMD, factors that may play a role in sleepwalking include genetics, the environment and different medical conditions that may influence the development of sleepwalking. Sleepwalking is not associated with other sleeping problems, solitary sleeping or fear of darkness.

WebMD explains that sleepwalking occurs more often in identical twins, and people are 10 times as likely to sleepwalk if a first-degree relative has sleepwalked. Insufficient sleep, alcohol intoxication, inconsistent sleep schedules and various drugs are considered to be factors in sleepwalking. Medical conditions including abnormal heart rhythms, fever, night time asthma and seizures, obstructive sleep apnea, gastroesophageal reflux, and various psychiatric disorders are also linked to the development of sleepwalking.
